Binges, Blenders, and Bosu Balls
I’ve been working on my website (yes, finally!) and was recently challenged to come up with phrases or metaphors that capture the experience most people are having these days — navigating what feels like a relentless state of change.
As humans, we enjoy challenges. We even seek out change. But it’s the living in uncertainty part that gets to us. That in-between space where you don’t know what’s coming next. In those moments, we instinctively reach for what feels predictable — whether it’s a healthy ritual or a guilty pleasure like binge-watching a favorite show (pro tip: re-binging further eliminates uncertainty).
We crave stability. And for good reason. Psychologists and leadership thinkers alike agree that stability grounds us, calms our nervous systems, and gives us a base from which we can stretch, grow, and face hard things.
Leadership consultant Ashley Goodall named our current condition “Life in a Blender.” It’s a vivid image — everything flying around at high speed, all mixed up together, no sense of control. But while it captures the chaos, the phrase doesn’t offer a way to live in the blender.
That’s where another image comes in.
What if life is more like a Bosu ball?
If you’ve ever stepped onto a Bosu ball (and trust me, I’m no pro), you know the feeling: instability, constant micro-adjustments, a low-key terror you might faceplant. But with a little practice, you start to find moments of balance, even strength, right there in the wobble.
Of course, just like life, there are always those people with incredible moves — balancing, jumping, making it look effortless on this unpredictable surface. And then there are the rest of us, trying to stand steady, occasionally managing a fancy move, often falling off, and climbing back on. Again and again.
This short video captures it perfectly: Expectations vs. Reality
From this one minute, we can learn five things about the Bosu ball (and life):
- Get back on. The first tumble — or the tenth — doesn’t mean you’re done.
- Return to the basics. When it gets too wobbly, plant your feet. Regain your balance. Get fancier when you’re stable.
- Celebrate your moves. Even the smallest victories deserve some singing.
- Fall off with good humor. It’s funny when you let it be.
- Do it together. We’re all balancing on this unstable surface. It’s easier — and a lot more fun — when we can laugh, fall, and rise with each other.
As we search for enduring, sustainable ways to live, lead, and stay grounded amid constant change, maybe the goal isn’t perfect balance. Maybe it’s learning to wobble well. And to remember nobody’s moves are flawless.
Here’s to your finding your wobble with heart and humor!
