The Wisdom of Unlearning
Making Space for Growth
As I enjoy the third week of my short “refresh,” I came across something too good not to pass along.
It’s attributed to a Zen proverb:
“Knowledge is learning something every day. Wisdom is letting go of something every day.”
I love that! Maybe because so much of life seems to invite us to keep adding: more information, more skills, more plans, more opinions, more certainty.
And, of course, learning matters. But how do we grow if we keep cramming ourselves full? And what is the value of all this knowledge acquisition in the AI era?
Wisdom asks something different of us. Wisdom asks: “What am I ready to release?”
- Maybe it is an old assumption.
- Maybe it is a habit of needing to be right.
- Maybe it is a story about who we have to be.
- Maybe it is a shell that once protected us, but now feels a little too tight.
I’ve been thinking a lot this year about letting go, unlearning, and the kind of growth that asks us not only to become more, but also to carry less.
Knowledge may help us move faster.
Wisdom may help us move more freely.
So right now, I’m keeping it simple and asking myself:
What is one thing I want to let go of today?
Here’s to trusting that, while we continually gain knowledge, our true wisdom lies in curating that collection.
