Celebrating Fatherhood – All the Ways it Shows Up!
Today I’m reflecting on fatherhood in all its forms.
There’s the biological father — whether known or not — who gives us life. There’s the father figure — the one who shows up, raises us, teaches us, guides us. Sometimes that’s the same person. Sometimes not. Fatherhood can be found in a step-parent, uncle, coach, mentor, or friend.
There’s the teaching aspect — how to ride a bike, tie a shoe, change a tire, write a paper. And then there’s the deeper guidance: how to see the world, face setbacks, show up with humor, or lead with integrity.
And then there’s the enduring kind — the quiet presence over time. The one who keeps showing up through all of life’s joys and sorrows.
I was blessed to have a father who embodied all of this.
My dad gave me life while a young Air Force officer, studying at Syracuse University. He saved my life as a slightly older officer when I choked on vitamins while we were stationed in rural South Dakota. He enriched my life with outdoor adventures, especially when we lived in Colorado Springs — hiking, picnicking, marveling at mountains.
He shaped my life by instilling a work ethic — like the time I wanted to quit my first job waitressing, at that time in Myrtle Beach. “It builds character,” he said with a smile, handing me Band-Aids and driving me back for day two.
He inspired my life through his own: A life of service. To country. To family. To the people he worked with and led. He was decorated, but never boastful. Grounded in his Appalachian roots, he led with kindness, humility, and almost always with a twinkle in his eye.
He was playful. Sometimes clumsy. Always steadfast. A quiet anchor through our storms.
Today, I celebrate him. And all those who have fathered — through presence, protection, play, or guidance.
Here’s to the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, friends, mentors, and every soul who has offered love, laughter, strength, or shelter.
You are seen. You are appreciated. You are remembered.
Happy Father’s Day!
