From Stuck to Alive: The Power of Possibility
One of the best things about travel—especially to new places, time zones, languages, and cultures—is the gift of returning with fresh eyes. Seeing beyond perceived limits to new potential:
- That ancient rock we brought home? Instead of fretting over how to place it without “disrupting” anything, I clear all the surfaces and play with the whole collection.
- My website? The page that felt overwhelming and impossible to finish before I left is now flowing as I put ideas into AI, experimenting and iterating different approaches.
- Relationships? Instead of trying to “say it just right” to get a loved one to see things my way, I ask questions, offer options, and trust them to choose their own path.
Tired eyes are filled with doubt. Doubt in myself, in others, even in the universe’s capacity for energy, love, and creativity. Doubt whimpers, It’s too much work. Too complicated. Too messy. It keeps me stuck, in stasis. And for us humans, stasis (until human hibernation techniques are more advanced) leads to death.
Fresh eyes are filled with possibility. Possibility whispers, Play. Explore. Be curious. It reminds me that our capacity for love, energy, and creativity is unlimited. Possibility keeps us alive, attuned to the life force within ourselves, others, and the world.
Yet how do we find fresh eyes in between restorative vacations or retreats? For me, mindfulness meditation is my reset button.
This morning, after two weeks of only brief practice, I sat for a while. At first simply arriving—taking in the sounds, sensations, and breath—before turning more deeply inward. Without overthinking, I found my attention gently moving through each energy center in my body, noticing what was there.
What emerged surprised me. I began sensing my well-known inner “characters”—the protective Mama Bear, the fire-breathing dragon, the multitasking executive, the tongue-tied teenager—each finding their own special place, yet all connected and integrated through my higher self. It felt grounded and whole, not because I pushed for anything, just by staying open to whatever might arise – or not.
Possibility doesn’t promise specific results – that’s the domain of doubt and the impossible task of controlling outcomes. Possibility promises an experience, one of discovery, learning, and growth. It thrives when we suspend our assumptions and give ourselves the space to simply be.
Here’s to trading our tired eyes in for more curious ones, one mindful moment at a time!
