Gratitude as the Guide
Leading Us Beyond Our Fear
I’ve been working with gratitude this week.
Not gratitude because things are easy or because life is unfolding exactly as I hoped.
Gratitude for this whole life. All of it.
All of its joys and sorrows. Its unexpected gifts and painful lessons. All of the people I’ve been inspired by, loved, and sometimes lost. The experiences that challenged and stretched me in ways I never would have chosen, but never would have changed.
Gratitude isn’t always available. Our brains are beautifully designed to notice what could go wrong. That wiring has helped our species survive for millennia.
But survival is only part of living. Gratitude gently expands our vision to see all the other parts. It doesn’t ask us to deny pain or pretend everything is fine. Instead, it reminds us that pain is not the whole story. It helps us hold both the sorrow and the love, the uncertainty and the possibility, while illuminating the quiet goodness that fear alone cannot see.
Perhaps that’s why gratitude feels so healing.
- 🌿 It softens our resistance.
- 🌿 It opens our hearts.
- 🌿 It anchors us in the present moment.
And from that steadier place, we begin to notice what has been nourishing and sustaining us all along.
I’ve come to believe that gratitude is one of the simplest practices we have for moving from surviving to thriving. Not because our circumstances suddenly change. But because our vision does. We begin to see not only what threatens us, but also what sustains us. Not only what is broken, but what is quietly growing. Not only what has been lost, but what is waiting to be discovered.
Here’s to noticing all the quiet goodness present in your life today!
